Braveheart 2015
Posted by Ciaran Tobin on 15 June 2015
Nearly 600 runners took part in the Braveheart 5km race staged by Trim Athletic Club in the historic Porchfields on the banks of the historic river Boyne on Friday evening. The race venue was extensively used for set locations when the award winning film was made in Ireland twenty years ago this summer. The pageantry of the occasion was enhanced by the setting among the medieval monuments and the activities of members of Trim Drama Group and local historical reenactment enthusiasts.
The main event was preceeded by three well supported juvenile races which saw over three hundred pupils from local schools taking on a one kilometre version of the course with some relish.
Comfortable weather conditions were very favourable from a competitors and spectators perspective. There was a comfortable victory over the undulating course for Peter Brandon in a time of 15.40 with a gap of 19 seconds back to the other recent Dunboyne recruit Lezan Kimutai, a former winner of the Dublin City Marathon.Third spot went to the versatile Meath runner Peter Mooney in a time of 16.10.
In the womens event Deirdre Byrne from the Sli Chulainn club put in an impressive performance to coplete the five kilometres in 18 minutes flat. Ann Linden, Carrick Aces was next home in 18.57 and returning to the Trim race after a three year absence was Karen Lavelle, Star of the Sea AC who made the final podium spot in a time of 19.39.
The first Meath affiliated male and female runners are awarded with the Larry and Paul Daly Perpetual Cups. This year the honours were presented by John Daly son of one of the clubs founders Larry Daly to Peter Brandon and Karen Lavelle. Each year the event supports deserving local charities and this year the beneficiaries are the Louth Meath branch of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland which provides family supports at the Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda and the Leinster River Rescue Service which operates a voluntary aquatic search and rescue service in the region.
