Euorpean Junior experience for Harry Purcell
Posted by Ciaran Tobin on 21 July 2015
Harry Purcell represented Ireland at the European Junior athletics championships in Eskilstuna between the 16th and 19th of July. He put in two very good performances over the weekend and emphasised his standing as the leading young 800m runner in Ireland. On Friday he got his tactics spot on in heat 2 with a good solid run of 1.54.55 giving him victory and a place in the semis the following day. On Saturday Harry lined up in semi final 3. There were only 2 places guaranteed from each semi with fastest losers making up the eight finalist. Harry ran a brave race making sure not to get boxed in. He placed himself well and seemed set to qualify when making the break with 200m alongside Briton Thomas Spenser. The duo were reeled in in the final 30 metres by Russian Kholmmogrov and the winner Mateus Borkovski of Poland. Harry placed fourth in 1.51 however the fastest losers came from heat 2 and he was denied a place in the final where the Pole who won Harrys heat took the bronze medal.
Well done Harry from all your colleagues at Trim AC.
