Shane Aston travelled to Belgium last weekend to take part in the Nieuwpoort combined events competition. His focus this season is on attaining 7000 points in the decathlon. An unfortunate fall in the 110m hurdles in which he got up to come home second the French athlete Martin lost him the vital breakthough points tally. He has two more competitions to achieve his goal this season in Belfast and Hexham.

Shanes tally from Begium were as follows : 100m - 11.33, long jump 6.83, shot putt - 12.55, high jump - 1.99m, 400m - 51.32, 110mh - 18.80 after falling, discus - 38.08m, pole vault - 4.10m, javelin - 55.66m, 1500m - 4.58. Total score was 6733 , if the hrudles had gone to plan he could have exceeded the 7000point target by 200 points.
