The course of sixteen miles around the lake is ideal for walkers joggers and aspiring marathon runners. It combines relatively flat sections to some challenging hills that offer magnificant views of the countryside. For the more leisurely participants there are four logical resting points, Finea, Crover, Mountnugent and an area near Ross Castle. The organisers have a dedicated group of members and volunteers to marshall the route, provide refreshments and the logistics of catering for the needs of many hundreds of walkers and runners. For serious runners looking forward to the Dublin City marathon the sixteen mile run is the ideal preparation. Locally however the runners from Cavan Meath and Westmeath will race to win the Challenge and "Claim Lough Sheelin" for their county.
