Trim area schools get set for CC finals

Posted by Ciaran Tobin on 13 March 2014

The Meath primary schools cross country championships will be staged at Fairyhouse on Friday 14 March at 11 am. These championships are being organised by the Meath Athletics Board and they have grown into one of the highlights of the underage sporting year attracting up to one thousand young runners from around the area.

Trim Athletic Club has been involved in the staging of qualifiers at numerous local schools in recent years. There were team and individual successes at last years championships and the indications from this years qualifiers give grounds for optimism.
On Tuesday morning club chairman Ciaran Tobin assisted two local schools Kiltale NS and Kilbride NS with their qualifying races. As well as getting involved in the schools cross country for the past number of years Kiltale NS has staged a marathon challenge over the course of the school year. Rose Cullen school principal and Catherine McLernon from Kiltale NS have promoted this program for the past 2 years. This year Kilbride NS under the guidance of former triple jump champion and new school principal Lynette Parke have began their own Marathon Programme. Each pupil in the school undertakes a one mile run for 26 week over the school year. It is a simple, inexpensive and very effective mass participation sporting/fitness programme which encourages ALL the children.
The St Michaels NS qualifiers were announced last week. St Marys NS under the guidance of club member Mary Carr will be heading to Fairyhouse on Friday. The Gaelscoil na Boinne qualifiers are due to be run off on Wednesday morning.
Boardsmill NS have proven to be very adept at getting onto the podium at this event down the years and look well prepared once again.

Trim AC would like to wish all the children the best of luck representing their respective schools and hope they will be happy with their efforts on Friday. Special thanks to the schools which have supported this event.
