Way out west

The Connemara International Marathon is one of the world’s most scenic events, set in the dramatic scenery of the west of Ireland. The 2015 edition staged last Sunday its fourteenth year in running, growing in numbers each year from 73 runners to its sell out point, in excess of 3,000 runners. The event comprises of half, full and ultra (39.3 mile) marathons. Participants will enjoy some of Ireland’s most beautiful scenery as they meander through bogs, hills, lakes, and the twelve pins mountain range, rising up over the great expanse of Killary Lough, through the sleepy village of Leenane, around the Maam Turk Mountains and all the way up to Maam Cross. The Connemarathon attracts runners and walkers from all over the world. In 2014 participants came from 28 countries to experience the stunning course.

Here is David Hawcrofts account of his experience. " I managed to get around alright in 6hrs 50 mins, and came 110 out of 164 finishers which is OK I think.  Also won the over 60s (second guy was two hours behind - so I imagine he was an amateur jogger).

Actually when I woke up in the hotel I was panicking. The rain was belting down (what my grandmother used to call 'bouncing rain'), and I thought there was no way i  was going to finish in that.  All the way to the start in the shuttle bus (lots of gallows humour) it rained ; and then eased off just before the start!!  In fact after about 12 miles or so the sun came out and we had blue skies and sun. Added to that there was snow on the hills, so it was rather like a Tourist Board calendar photo. However there was a strongish wind in the middle section (as there always is) and it was arctic.

I was pleased with the way my body held up; feet OK and I was able to run most of the final 13 mile section. I adopted the jeff galloway approach which is to start walking early, so i ran between mile markers and walked for 10-15 seconds at each interval; paid dividends later when I was  able to pass a few dozen dead and dying.

The race has been taken over by a commercial sports organisers, and among the changes was that they no longer give out the iconic and recognisable T shirt (was it is about 'not fixing something that ain't broke' but how often do you see someone take over a successful enterprise and then change it).

Anyway that's me done for long distance stuff. All the family have strict instructions that if I even mention a long race they are to burn my shoes.
