Athlone IT indooor arena hosted the Athletics Ireland indoor combined events championships on Saturday. Shane Aston lived up to his pre event favourite status by claiming his third consecutive victory. In recent years Shane has lined up against hurdles specialist Gerard O Donnell on many occasions. This time the challenge was the first time they faced off in a combined events competition. In the first of the five events the 60m hurdles, O'Donnell prevailed and followed up with equal points in the high jump. Shane scored a convincing win in the shot putt was second in the long jump and ran out a comfortable winner in the 1000m.
Caoimhe Rowe competed in the junior womens combined events.Her two best results were second place in the 800m and the shot putt. Caoimhe is progressing nicely in combined events and aims to push on further at schools and club level this season.
Shanes winning series was as follows;
60m hurdles, 8.30s,908 points,2nd; High Jump,2.01m,813 points,2nd,Shot Putt,12.25m,624 points,1st,Long Jump, 6.66m,734 points,2nd, 1000metres, 3m02s.,641 points,1st. Aggregate score 3720 points.
Caoimhes series was as follows;
60m hurdles, 10.80s,570 points,3rd, High Jump, 1.30m,409 points,3rd, Shot Putt,6.80m,322 points,2nd, Long Jump, 4.32,384 points,3rd,800m. 2m28 716 points,2nd Aggregate score 2401
