1.When did you start running?
I ran my first race (since school and didn’t enjoy running back then) in the 2010 Braveheart 5k. My wife Marie entered me in the race as a hint that I mightn’t be getting enough exercise. Anyhow it was the most gorgeous evening and we decided to have a BBQ before the race, which turned out not to be such a great idea. Anyway, I ran the race got sick twice and finally finished near the back of the pack but felt completely invigorated and got up early on a number of days the following week to run in the Porch fields. I had caught the running bug… (not the virus)
2. When did you join Trim AC ?
I joined Trim AC in 2011 after trying to run my first marathon pretty much on my own and found it a struggle and realised I needed help if I wanted to improve. Best decision I ever made.
3.Why do you run ?
To keep fit and it does wonders for clearing the head. But I also run for the social aspect of running & chatting with my wonderful club mates.
4.Favourite event, race or competition ? Other than our own Trim AC Braveheart I would have to say my favourite race is the Na Fianna AC Bob Heffernan 5k in Johnstown Bridge in May. I love the route and always enjoy the cup of tea and bun in the Hamlet Court afterwards.
5. Have you any pre event routine apart from your warmup ?
I try to drink as much water as I can before a race to stay hydrated. But often requires a few loo trips before the gun goes.
6. Favourite type of training. ?
The hill sessions in the Porchfields. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful amenity in our town.
7.Who is your athletics hero ?
The club members who volunteer their time to help organize our race events, train our juvenile members and our committee members. Its there hard work that make Trim AC such a special club.
8. What is your best memory from the sport ?
Probably the 2013 DCM when I broke 4 hour mark. My previous effort in 2011 was just under 5 hours. The improvement was all down to joining Trim AC.
9. What is the best race or athletics competition you ever watched but did not take part in ?
The 2012 Olympics in London was very exciting to watch.
10. What aspect of the sport gives you satisfaction ?
The support and enthusiasm I get from my fellow club runners when training or racing.
11. How important is group training to you ?
It’s the highlight of my week and I feel lost without the training sessions this last few weeks.
12. Has the sport influenced life in general ? I would day yes. I have more confidence in myself and feel inspired to give back to my own local community as I feel I have got so much from running with the club.
13 . Have you a favourite meal before or after events ?
Green tea and little bit of dark chocolate just to top up the energy levels before a race and then a nice cup of tea and bun after a race.
14. What motivates you to go training on a wet and windy day ?
The hardest bit is taking the first step out the door. Once I’m running you don’t notice the rain (the wind is another matter) but I always feel a great sense of satisfaction after training in bad weather.
15. What advice would you give a new member ?
Stick at the training twice a week. It can be hard starting on your own and it will take a few weeks but you will find your level and your group and I guarantee you will meet some wonderful people and have sense of belonging which I believe is unique to our little club.
