Meet our Athletes; Andrew Revington

Posted by Ciaran Tobin on 27 May 2020

Having a very hectic work schedule does not stop this man from ticking off the boxes in his running targets. Frequently getting a training run done around five in the morning before the milking.

Andrew Revington will take on a 5km road race with the same mindset as on of the six majors.

1.When did you start running ?

I started running when I was young.....42 and 3/4. It was January 2012. I ran 2 miles at 5am one morning . My wife Joan told me I was cracked when I came in but I never really looked back. I did my first half marathon in Bohermeen early March that year and shortly after my first full in May. My goal was to run a 56K ultra the following year in South Africa. I didn't actually get there until 2015 but I did get it done.

2. How did you end up joining the club ?

For the first 2 years I ran on my own thinking I wasn't nearly up to a club standerd. But one day at a 5K I met Claire Smith who had crossed the line just behind me. I was in school with Claire but probably hadn't seen her in 20 years or more. We chatted about maybe doing an odd run together which we did and on one of these runs she was telling me all about Trim AC and how good the training was and how I had nothing to fear. So I made my way over, Claire introduced me to Ciaran Tobin .

Heather Carty introduced herself and for the next 2 months I was simply known to all as Claire's friend !! This was March 2014 I think.

3. Favourite race(Excluding the Trim 10 Miler and Braveheart 5k) ?

Probably 2 races here. DCM & London marathon

4. What do you crave after a run ?

Has to be Avonmore Protein Milk 5. Pre-race meal Same as every other day.....Porridge and lots of it.

6. Miles or KM

What's a KM???

7. Any race superstition

No.

8. Track, road or XC?

Road

9. Why do you run ?

Probably the first reason and why I started was to get fitter and try and see could I lower cholesterol levals. After that it was the fun of being part of the club and racing was getting more interesting to me as I got fitter and faster. It was great to pick up an odd prize here and there and some county medals in my age category. I'm very driven by setting goals and if I have a goal I will almost always achieve it even if it takes longer than planed. I have no running goals at the moment which probably explains my lack of motivation to train hard these days. But that might change soon. While chatting to a club mate last week they suggested something to me which certainly got me thinking. I'm not saying anything more about this for now though, but it's not the bribe of cash you offered me Ellen Vitting !!!

10. Best running memory?

I have two that stand out a mile....First one was completing the 6 World Marathon Majors in 2017 and later that same year running 2:59 in DCM

11. What do you miss most from a running perspective during lockdown?

This lockdown hasn't been too bad for me at all. Over the last two years I havn't run much because of a couple of injures and I'm way too busy working. But I do still miss the club training. It was something to help get me out of a tractor and away from work for a while. Hopefully we get back training soon.

12. Most memorable race that you didn’t compete in?

In 2013 I said to Claire I'd pick her up after DMC, It was her first marathon and I was injured and didn't run it but decided to go up and have a look at the finish line anyway. I saw Sean Hehir come in first male and Maria McCambridge first female. But what I was most blown away by was seeing a 3 hour pacer come in with a small gang of runners and thinking to myself how fast they were !! And then seeing the 3:10, 3:20 & 3:30 come in after that. I had run 2 marathons in 2012 and both were around 3:59 so to even dare think about a sub 3 was a long long way off but it probably did sow a seed in the back of my mind.

13. Who is your running hero ?

Never really had one but I'm super impressed with all my club mates if that counts. From the fastest runners to the back of pack... particuarly over the marathon distance we all run the very same 26.2 miles which is amazing !!

14. Split shorts or tight shorts

Split shorts!!!

15. What do you listen to during a run( music/podcast) ?

After I joined the club I never listened to anything.... apart from Heather !! That can't be helped as we all just hear Heather.
