Meet our Athletes; Anke Hannuka

Posted by Ciaran Tobin on 25 May 2020

This runner has great taste in music but does her training with the sounds of what's around her rather than

Pet Sounds, Sgt Pepper or Surfer Rosa.

Today we meet Anke Hannuka

1.When did you start running

After I had my 4th child in 2015, I wanted to get back in shape. Walking wasn’t really cutting it for me so I downloaded the C25K app and followed it to a T. I was proud to be able to run the 5km after the 8 weeks, as I hadn’t ran since I was a child. I was hooked!

2. When did you join Trim AC ?

In May 2016 after I finished the C25K programme. Heather and Paula gave me lots of advice and encouraged me to join.

3.Why do you run ?

Mainly for the head space and the buzz you get after a good session. I also love discovering what my body is capable of.

4.Favourite event, race or competition (other than a Trim AC event)?

I have to go for the Father Murphy 5k in Athboy. The only event I’ve ever won anything at and nothing beats having the the 1st km going down hill!! (I’m a little lazy).

5.Do you listen to music, podcasts or the natural world while running ?

I’ve dabbled in music and podcasts for long runs, but I generally don’t listen to anything, I like being aware of my surroundings, and prefer to have the bare minimum of accessories on me.

6. Favourite type of training. ?

Really depends – I usually suffer through intervals, but I always feel great after them. Long runs can be nice especially with good company.

7.Who is your athletics hero ?

Kathrine Switzer – She was a very brave woman to run at a male only event, and I admire her guts.

8. What is your best memory from the sport ?

I love the post race chats – comparing times, the course, best/worst parts etc. There’s always a great buzz after a race.

9. What is the best race or athletics competition you ever watched but did not take part in ?

Honestly – probably the Braveheart 5k or the Trim 10 Mile – as I love cheering on everyone including of course some familiar faces from the club. I love the events and enjoy being a spectator.

10. What aspect of the sport gives you satisfaction ?

I love how the group training prepares me for races, and I love seeing improvements come as a result of hard work.

11. How important is group training to you ?

It’s very important as I feel most just don’t push themselves as hard when they train alone. There’s always a bit of friendly competition in the club, and that’s what makes me faster and stronger.

12. Has the sport influenced life in general ?

Yes, fitting in time for a run is as important as doing the shopping or getting housework done etc. I also have to think about what I eat and when so it doesn’t interfere with my training. It’s part of my routine and I don’t feel “right” if I miss too many run sessions.

13 .What do you feel is your best sporting attribute?

I would say I’m very determined, and don’t quit easily.

14. What motivates you to go training on a wet and windy day ?

I always say, that in this country – if you stay in every time the weather turns – you’d be in more times than out. I also tell myself that once I’m wet – I can’t get anymore wet, so it’s just a few moments of discomfort and then you get used to it! Also, a nice hot shower is very comforting after a cold/wet/windy run!

15. What advice would you give a new member ?

I would say that if you are holding back because you don’t feel like a “real runner” , please just give the club a try. There are so many levels of ability in the club, and Ciarán shows the same care and enthusiasm to all. I was apprehensive myself initially as everyone looked like they really knew what they were doing. Then I realized that all you need to be a runner, is a pair of runners and some space to run in.
