Meet our Athletes; James Guiheen

Posted by Ciaran Tobin on 18 May 2020

A familiar figure on the roads and fields around Trim. James Guiheen has made very steady progress since joining the club and is reaping the rewards with his results, none as impressive as breaking his 3hour marathon time on the challenging Dingle Marathon course .

1.When did you start running ?

I began running in 2013 after smoking for many years it was a way of trying to get myself back to some kind of fitness and to keep myself from going back to old habits

2. How did you end up joining the club?

After running around Trim without any structure to my training I had sort of brought myself to a point where I wasnt really seeing any real progress, so after speaking to Niall we thought it was time to join the club.

3. Favourite race(Excluding the Trim 10 Miler and Braveheart) ?

Although I do like the relay in Wicklow after running the Dingle marathon they dont get much better than that.

4. What do you crave after a run ?

I dont really crave anything after a run but after training for a marathon when its finished there is nothing better than a few pints.

5. Pre-race meal ?

Before a marathon I would have a bowl of cereal and toast with jam,but other races would go on an empty stomach.

6. Miles or KM ?

Km

7. Any race superstition  ?

No

8. Track, road or XC?

Road

9. Why do you run ?

It certainly helps clear the head and just to do something for an hour or two where you can completely shut yourself off from everything else, you feel so much better once it's done.

10. Best running memory?

After completing my first marathon in 2015 and gradually getting better over the years running a sub 3hr in Dingle has to be the best for me.

11. What do you miss most from a running perspective during lockdown?

Meeting the club members for run and the social aspect also.

12. Most memorable race that you didn’t compete in ?

The London marathon the last couple of years as I thought I had done enough to get there through gfa but they kept changing qualifying times, and after finally qualifying covid 19 seems to have put an end to London 2020 so maybe next year.

13. Who is your running hero ?

Anyone who is brave enough to lace up those shoes and put themselves on a start line is a hero to me so we have plenty within our club.

14. Split shorts or tight shorts ?

Split shorts!!!

15. What do you listen to during a run( music/podcast)?

Never listen to music while running, so while hitting the roads on those long runs the sound of nature is enough for me.
