Rowing, rugby and now running

Throw in some multi discipline events and a dollop of adventure racing

There you have the ever improving Kieran Corcoran

1.When did you start running

I used to row when I was kid 14-17 & ran a bit..more so part of winter training. I used to also play rugby in the past, again when I was in my teens & then in my mid to late 20s. I only got into running races in my early 30s, a second lease of life after getting married & having kids.

2. When did you join Trim AC ?

After moving to Trim in 2012, I trained lone wolf for while & ran a few roads races. In 2014, after coming to conclusion It wasn’t just a phase..I messaged Ciaran, popped down one Tuesday night & got stuck in.

3.Why do you run ?

To get outside & breath.

4.Favourite event, race or competition (other than a Trim AC event)?

You can’t go wrong with two local Meath races, Dunshuaghlin 10k & Streets of Athboy 5k. Two very fast Pb courses & great spreads afterwards.

5.Do you listen to music, podcasts or the natural world while running ?

The natural world is just fine. The data on my running watch also keeps me entertained.

6. Favourite type of training. ?

I do like 5x1km reps at 5 km target pace, with a short rest if you’re hitting target pace on the last rep you’re ready to race.

7.Who is your athletics hero ?

Sonia & Marcus O’Sullivan ..Sonia because she was simply the best. Marcus wasn’t bad either, but his consistency is what really stands out, 101 x sub 4min miles is some feet by any standards. Their also both from Cork (my home county), which’s makes them fairly special aswell.

8. What is your best memory from the sport ?

I have loads, coming 3rd in Connemarathon last year was sweet personally. Dcm 2015 wasn’t bad either, I dipped under 3hours for the first time.. by seconds.

9. What is the best race or athletics competition you ever watched but did not take part in ?

I got engaged to my wife Susan at the end of her first half marathon in Wexford’s in 2013 ..so I’d be killed if I didn’t say that.

10. What aspect of the sport gives you satisfaction ?

Athletics is a such a honest & simple sport, you always (or most of the time) get what you put in. I love that about it, there’s not much politics or any referees to debate decisions. If you work hard & train sensible you’ll get rewards.

11. How important is group training to you ?

Group training is key to all runners including me, everyone from couch to 5k to World record holders.. it’s why we push ourselves out the door & find that extra % in training.

12. Has the sport influenced life in general ?

Absolutely, the confidence & mental strength I’ve gained from running is something I’ve applied to all areas of my life from family life , to work & to my overall well being.

13 .What do you feel is your best sporting attribute?

That’s a hard one, I’m can be quite stubborn.. I mean determined (Susan tells me), I guess that helps sometimes when it comes to competitive sport.

14. What motivates you to go training on a wet and windy day ?

The feeling afterwards.

15. What advice would you give a new member ?

Put your runners on, walk a couple of steps, close the door & start running.
