A runner whose time in the sport goes back to the 70s

He has a great affinity with all aspects of athletics.

Supporting the club scene is the key for

MARTIN BROGAN

1.When did you start running

Joined Fr. Murphy AC in 1973. I was predominantly a sprinter

100mtr, 200mts, 400mtrs and cross country in the winter.

2. When did you join Trim AC ?

Joined in 2008 in an effort to give up smoking which succeeded.

3.Why do you run ?

It makes me feel good mentally and physical and it gets rid of negative

feelings,

4.Favourite event, race or competition (other than a Trim AC event)?

Oldcastle 5k.  Good to support Socal clubs like St. Brigids.

5.Do you listen to music, podcasts or the natural world while running ?

I listen to nothing. Cannot really enjoy the sounds of nature apart from whats coming out of me because

I’m usually struggling to keep going!!

6. Favourite type of training. ?

Progression sessions because its slow to start which suits me and then I warm up and able to go quicker. An older engine takes longer to get going!!!

7.Who is your athletics hero ?

Cathriona Mc Kiernan – A great runner, a great person.

Andrew Ledwith - Fr. Murphy AC.  Who represented Meath and Ireland at the higest level and an absolute gentleman. Pity he is still not running in Ireland.

8. What is your best memory from the sport ?

Coming 2nd in Leinster U16  Track & Field Championship100 metres. Also represented Trim in Meath & Leinster Community Games. Winning the 0/50 Streets of Athboy 5k race.

Representing Meath in the Masters Cross Country. I tried the long jump but only had a short jump.

9. What is the best race or athletics competition you ever watched but did not take part in ?

Sonia O Sullivan winning the 10,000mtrs Gold

10. What aspect of the sport gives you satisfaction ?

Great way to get to know new people in the area.

11. How important is group training to you ?

It’s good to get into a group with people of your own level and

enjoy the camaraderie.

12. Has the sport influenced life in general ?

Definitely healthier and positive outlook on life. Might live longer.

13 .What do you feel is your best sporting attribute?

Always able to get going again even after a bad run.

!4. What motivates you to go training on a wet and windy day ?

The guilt if I do not go out for a run.

15. What advice would you give a new member ?

Do not be overawed by the fast runners.  There is a level for everyone you just have to stick with it. You will find people you are happy to run with and people who are happy to run with you.
