Meet our Athletes; Robert Farrell

Posted by Ciaran Tobin on 10 May 2020

Meet our Athletes.
"Aint no mountain high enough" This man relishes the challenges of Wicklow, Kerry and the Mournes. He wont forget his first ever Ras na hEireann at Oldbridge and neither will those from the club who met him at the finish ! Today it's Robert Farrell.

1.When did you start running

Summer 2011. In Aura gym my cousin Frank asked did I want to train for DCM. The rest is history

2. How did you end up joining the club

Don Mahon and Ciaran Tobin. Any time I met them when I was training for DCM ( albeit very badly. I made every rookie mistake. I mean everyone ) they encouraged me to join. I'll never forget my 1st run with the club. Jan 2012 Don Mahon asked me to join them on a run and I said sure. I rocked up Don, Enda, Sean Murphy and a few big hitters. Let's just say that didn't go well. Got to the end of Rathnally and done a U-turn with my lungs on the floor.

3. Favourite race(Excluding the Trim 10 mile n Braveheart)

Has to be Wicklow Way Relay ( Love the team aspect of it with club members) . Solo race would be Run The Line in the hills. I do love the mountains.

4. What do you crave after a run?

Nothing really but it's hard to beat a can of coke after a long run .

5. Pre-race meal

Could be a anything from a fredo and a can of coke to porridge and toast.

6. Miles or KM

Miles but getting used to km. Seemingly it's the way forward.

7. Any race superstitions?

Not one. What will be will be.

8. Track, road or XC?

I've definitely done more road running but my love is the mountains and XC. Never seem to get to do XC these days as always seem to be injured or wrecked at end of season after doing stupid amount of marathons.

9. Why do you run ?

I run purely for the way it makes me feel and the challenge. I suffer from depression which can get scary sometimes but running just brings me alive. It's a huge part of my life. If I had one bit of advice for anyone suffering I would say get out get some excerise into you. Doesnt matter what it is.Some fresh air and excerise and the world doesnt seem as dark.

10. Best running memory?

Now that's a good question. I would like to say my 1st marathon but that was an horrendous experience . Probably finishing my RAW 50miler in Wicklow and wanting to go again

11. What do you miss most from the lockdown/running??

Well I'm injured at the minute(again). So definitely out running with clubmates pushing you on. I'm a social person so trying to avoid people is not good for me.

12. Most memorable race that you didn’t compete in

Definitely Berlin 2016 when my better half completed her 1st marathon. To go from being nearly paralysed to run a marathon was awe-inspiring.

13. Who is your running hero??

I love Usain Bolt. I love everything he stands for but the person I most look up to and respect is Sean Murphy. Top class runner and top class man. Would do anything to help you. When I heard he won Dingle last year it made my day. Top man.

14. Split shorts or tight shorts

No shorts No preference.

15. What do you listen to during a run( music/podcast)

I cant listen to music or podcasts. It destroys why I run. I need to be able to hear the birds and the bees and release my mind of negativity.
