Meet our Athletes; Tom Moore

Posted by Ciaran Tobin on 17 May 2020

Making the switch from the blue and white of the Deise to the red and white of Trim and turning in some very good results over the past three years is Tom Moore.

He recently organised a well supported fundraiser for the DoItForDan cause.

1.When did you start running

I ran everywhere when I was younger just to get around. My dad put me in a couple of local 10ks in Waterford when I was 12ish. After moving to soccer in my teens I took up running again casually doing 5 mile, 10 mile races in my mid 20s. Having seen my dad run a marathon it was always in my head to do one. After my sister passed away in 2009 the thoughts of one day wanting to do it became "life is too short" so just do it now. So I did my first Dublin marathon in 2009 and no matter how many times I said never again I have never looked back and already plan the next marathon while training for the current one.

2. How did you end up joining the club

I always thought clubs were for "good runners" and never considered myself one of them. I had looked at the club online a few times but work didn't line up with the Tuesday and Thursday training times. With my marathon times stagnating the wrong side of 3:30 (once in 10 getting under) I decided to join on 4th July 2017. Since joining I have completed 6 marathons all under 3:30

3. Favourite race(Excluding the Trim 10 Miler and Braveheart 5k)

Dublin marathon.

4. What do you crave after a run

I wouldn't say crave, but I try to have a fruit smoothie and hard boiled egg ready to go when I get back. Quick carbs and protein.

5. Pre-race meal

Usually 2 weetabix with a bit of granola, a banana and a glass of oj.

6. Miles or KM

Miles

7. Any race superstition

None.

8. Track, road or XC?

Road

9. Why do you run ?

I run for head space, fitness  and like most or all of us there is that bit of a competitor in me.

10. Best running memory?

2017 Dublin marathon. The first with the club. The buzz of the crowd that day, everything seemed to come together in what felt like the perfect race for me. Also the recent marathon run DoItForDan was special. No pressure, run on feel, great buzz any time I passed anyone from the club. For me it felt like we were all together when we had to stay apart.

11. What do you miss most from a running perspective during lockdown?

The banter between everyone on a Tuesday and Thursday evening. The company on a long run on a Sunday morning. The certainty of knowing when the next race will be to give you a focus to your training.

12. Most memorable race that you didn’t compete in

Two Dublin marathons.     In 2015 I got sick on the weekend of the marathon. I got as far as having breakfast at 6am on the morning but when your hands are shaking holding a spoon it is a sign to wait a year. The other was 2018. I was in an airport in London tracking all the club mates as they were flying around the course. Absolutely delighted for them as so many smashed PBs

13. Who is your running hero

On the international scene Michael Johnson, Usain Bolt.

But my true running heroes are the club mates that I train with that show me what is capable and inspire me to continue to improve. People like James Guiheen, Michael Counsel and Ernest that have taken their running to all new levels in the nearly 3 years that I have been part of the club. Just when you think you might be getting a bit closer they up the standard again.

14. Split shorts or tight shorts

Split shorts!!!

15. What do you listen to during a run( music/podcast)

Before the club I always listened to music on my runs. Since joining the club the music has disappeared a bit. It has made a return in recent weeks where I listen to play lists.
